Top tips for laying turf

Laying turf should be a job that most gardeners are able to complete themselves, but there are some guidelines to follow to ensure it is done correctly.

Below are the top tips regarding good preparation work to ensure the lawn has everything it needs to settle and grow stronger, plus some turf laying and aftercare advice.

Prepare a Deep Turf Laying Surface

The healthiest lawns have strong and deep roots so you will want to dig deep (between 20cm and 30cm) when preparing the ground for premium cultivated turf. The grass roots will need to grow deep to draw plenty of water and nutrients to help it cope with dry periods, foot traffic and even occasional disease.

Boost the Soil’s Nutrients

The healthier the soil beneath the lawn is, the healthier the lawn will be, so make sure to add some extra nutrients into the soil by adding a layer of quality topsoil or mixing in some compost before laying the turf. It is important to do this before laying turf as once it is laid, there will be little you can do to improve the soil beneath the lawn.

Only Order What You Need

Only order the premium cultivated turf once the ground has been prepared as described above. Ordering it before you have worked out your schedule can result in the rolls of turf being left in storage which causes them to dry out and deteriorate. You want to start laying it as quickly as possible after the turf is delivered, so figure out your timing before it arrives.

It’s also wise to only order what you can lay in one day, and spread the deliveries out over multiple days to ensure no turf rolls are being left in their rolled condition overnight.

Apply Pre-Turfing Fertiliser

Give your lawn the best chance of thriving by using a pre-turfing fertiliser on the turf before you lay it. This will boost the nutrient content of the turf itself and help it recover from the stress of being harvested, rolled, transported and re-laid.

Lay the Soil Correctly

It is good idea to arrange the premium cultivated turf rolls in locations where they are most efficiently positioned for laying. Also use laying boards for moving across the freshly laid turf, especially if you are using a wheelbarrow to transport materials back and forth. The boards will also help push the freshly laid turf down so its roots connect better with the soil underneath.

Lawn Aftercare Advice

Once the turf is laid, give it a serious watering as the grass will need it due to the reduction in its root length. It is a good idea to drench a freshly laid lawn as it will provide the water it needs to survive and re-grow its original roots, plus it will help the separate patches join together with each other and the soil underneath.

After the original drenching, the lawn will still need daily watering, though not as much as that first post-laying soak.

Now all you need to do is stay off the grass for three to four weeks. This is how long it takes for the roots to establish themselves and grow strong enough to handle foot traffic.
