Prepare for winter with Rock Salt from Springbridge

When winter hits it is easy to forget the impact this has on our homes, so prepare yourself and make winter easier with our range of winter care products.

When the icy conditions hit, we are all used to seeing the local councils grit Lorries patrolling the roads and preparing main highways for the wintery weather that is about to descend.

Gritting the main roads is wonderful and a great service to keep us all moving, however, what about the parts that the council can’t cover? They can’t do every pathway and they definitely don’t do your own steps or driveway.

Depending on where you live, there are grit salt bins dotted about that are for general use, however reading the Government website on gritting, it is clear that they will be filled less often than in recent years and the grit contained is only meant for public pathways and footpaths, not our own personal walkways and steps. Many people are unsure about the rules of gritting your own homes or the path in front of our homes, however rest assured that it is highly unlikely that you would be prosecuted or sued in the event that someone fell due to you clearing your pathways.

For more information regarding this, please visit your local council’s website.

The best way to ensure that your pathways and steps are ice free is by applying rock salt to any cleared areas. Scrape away the snow and untreated areas can refreeze and become more dangerous than before.

• Rock salt is used to prevent ice from forming. It does this by reducing the freezing point of water already on the road surface. This works well until temperatures drop below -70C, where even salt will not prevent ice from forming.• Rock salt is a great way to prevent or to melt ice from forming on hills, slopes, steps, walkways and driveways

• Rock salt can cause damage to plants and grass, so please ensure that you are careful when gritting garden areas

• Rock salt is corrosive to cars and concrete, so again, be careful when applying and never over salt areas. Use only what is needed and sweep away any excess before re-gritting a new layer

Here at Springbridge, we have both small bags of rock salt and bulk bags, depending on how much your individual project will require. Our rock salt which conforms to BS 3247: 1991 and is the same product used by the Highways Agency in its gritting lorries.
