There are many reasons why you need sand and shingle in the garden, and that’s why we stock a range of different types of sand, shingle and gravel in various shapes and sizes.
One of the key uses for sand in the garden is to add to the soil. Not all soil requires the addition of sand. Topsoil is loosely divided into three kinds: clay, sand and silt. Clay is very nutrient rich but doesn’t drain well.
That means that in the UK, where our outdoor spaces are often blighted by the Great British weather and it rains a huge amount over the year, this type of soil can become waterlogged and bad for growing. The ideal type of topsoil is loam, which is a mixture of two or three soil types. Ideally you need a soil that is around 30% clay and 70% sand. If your topsoil contains too much clay, then adding some sand can improve the drainage.
You can also use sand and shingle to create drainage ditches or channels to allow water to flow away from certain areas of the garden or into others.
However, it is not just for soil that sand and shingle is needed in the garden. Gardens often require small building work, in the form of walls for raised beds, patio areas and pathways. Building materials like sand and shingle are essential for building heavy-duty garden areas that will stand up to prolonged use and the elements.
For example, if you’re laying paving slabs for either a patio or pathway, then you need to first flatten the earth and lay a base of sand. This will help the heavier paving stones to settle in and prevent further moving over time. You also require sand for mixing with mortar and cement to create solid structures. Like sand, shingle can be added to cement and mortar mixes to improve strength. It can also be used to help set large stones or as a material to make paths and seating areas.
We stock a wide variety of sand and shingle, available in both large and small quantities. Choose from small or large bulk bags of 10mm shingle, it’s perfect for paths and building.
