December brings the end of autumn and the winter looms, but there is plenty to be getting on with in the garden to make sure lawns and plants are equipped to survive the coming rains and frosts.

Here is a quick checklist of gardening jobs for December.

Clear Away Autumn Leaves

Leaves left in piles on lawns can cause damage to the grass beneath, so it is essential to clear them away during December in time for the really cold weather during winter. You can also use the gathered leaves to create or add to compost.

Protect Tender Plants

December is the best time to protect any tender plants that don’t deal with frost and wind very well. Any tender plants in pots or containers can be moved somewhere that has shelter where you can cover them with landscape fabric or a horticultural fleece.

Clean Bird Baths and Feeders

The winter means food is sparse for birds and other friendly visitors to our gardens, so making sure any bird baths and feeders are in good condition should definitely be on the checklist for December. Keep them clean and well stocked so there is always somewhere to find some food and fresh water.

Remove Pond Pumps

If you have a pond, then December is a good time to clear out all the debris and remove the pump. The autumn debris will rot over winter, while frosts can cause damage to the pump.

Plant Shrubs and Evergreens

Covering tender plants doesn’t mean leaving your garden barren of vegetation though as there are plenty that thrive during the winter. Evergreens, shrubs and conifers should be planted in December while the soil is still moist and retains some warmth. If the weather is dry, then you will still need to water them. Hedges are another you can plant in December, though you will want to prepare the ground properly by mixing in plenty of garden compost to the topsoil.

Lawn Maintenance

As well as keeping the lawn clear of leaves and other debris, you may still need to give it a mow if the temperatures remain high enough. However, make sure you don’t cut it as short as you normally would during the summer, as longer blades of grass will fair better during the winter.
