Garden paths can look amazing as well as serve the function of letting you get about the garden without stepping on the grass or soil. There are a few ways to make a path, with a popular option being the laying of slabs to create a solid walkway. Using aggregates is the other popular choice, and it can be a lot prettier and colourful than bland paving slabs as well.

 

How to Make a Garden Pathway

 First you should mark out the intended pathway with pegged string and then carefully dig out the marked-out space. If you are making a path through a lawn, then careful removal of the turf will let you lay it somewhere else if you have the space.

 Once the pathway is dug out you should compact the base before applying any landscape fabric or aggregate. A roller machine is ideal but not absolutely necessary as you can compact it pretty well with just your feet. Just try and make it as even as possible.

 After compacting the soil you should cut landscape fabric to the width of the path and lay it out to completely cover the ground in the pathway to prevent weeds from sprouting up.

 Now lay your choice of aggregate on top of the fabric to a depth of around 4 or 5 centimetres and level it out with a rake. You can get creative here by using different aggregates to make patterns in the path, though bear in mind that this will probably require extra maintenance as the patterns are slowly disrupted by foot traffic.

 The best aggregates for pathways tend to be of a smaller size, ideally around 10mm as it is more stable for walking on. The 10mm shingle is perfect for a garden path, with the 20mm variety better used for a driveway.

 

Garden Path Borders

To keep the aggregate neat and tidy, it is a good idea to add a border along the edge of each side of the path. You can do this in any number of ways, from using timber or larger stones. Laying a line of bricks can work too, though you may want to dig them into the ground a little as well so they don’t stand tall over the path itself.
